Papers, 1861-1902.

The collection includes letters written by Hardwick to his family in Martinsville, Morgan County, Ind. during the Civil War. The letters discuss military operations, battles and camp life. Included is a detailed description of the 33rd Indiana Regiment's actions in Sherman's march through Georgia, and a regimental history. Also included are personal accounts of conditions at Libby Prison (Va) and a Confederate hospital at Columbia, Tenn.

John Hardwick of Martinsville, Morgan County, Ind. served in the 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Thompsons Station (Tenn.) in 1863 and spent several months in Libby Prison, Va. He returned to Martinsville after the war.
